Wat is VSME Module B5?

In module B5 van de VSME-standaard rapporteer je over de relatie tussen je bedrijf en biodiversiteit. Dit omvat twee hoofdonderdelen: of je actief bent in of nabij beschermde natuurgebieden, en hoe je je eigen terreinen gebruikt. Het doel is om inzicht te geven in de impact van bedrijfsactiviteiten op natuur en ecosysteemdiensten, bijvoorbeeld door verharding of nabijheid tot gevoelige gebieden.

Voor wie is VSME B5 verplicht?

De module is van toepassing op álle bedrijven, ook als je denkt dat je weinig impact hebt. Werk je bijvoorbeeld op een bedrijventerrein met veel verharding? Dan is dat relevant voor het onderdeel landgebruik. Heb je een locatie aan de rand van een Natura 2000-gebied? Dan moet je dat aangeven onder ‘biodiversiteitsgevoelige gebieden’.

Welke gegevens moet je invullen bij VSME B5?

  1. Biodiversiteitsgevoelige locaties

  • Heeft je bedrijf locaties (eigendom/gehuurd/beheerd) in of nabij beschermde natuurgebieden?

  • Voorbeelden zijn:

    • Natura 2000-gebied

    • UNESCO World Heritage Site

    • Key Biodiversity Area (KBA)

  • Als dat zo is, geef je per locatie aan:

    • Land en locatie

    • Oppervlakte (in hectare)

2. Landgebruik en veranderingen

Geef voor al je locaties aan:

  • Totale oppervlakte per type:

    • Verhard (wegen, gebouwen)

    • Natuur op eigen terrein (zoals groendaken, tuinen)

    • Natuur buiten terrein (grond die je bezit/beheert)

  • Verdeling per rapportagejaar én voorgaand jaar

De bedoeling is dat veranderingen in landgebruik zichtbaar worden. Je hoeft hiervoor geen exacte satellietdata aan te leveren — een schatting op basis van luchtfoto’s of plattegronden is voldoende.

Waarom is module B5 belangrijk?

Landgebruik is een belangrijke indicator voor biodiversiteitsverlies. Overheden, financiers en ketenpartners willen weten:

  • Of je bedrijf effect heeft op natuurgebieden

  • Hoe je terrein is ingericht (bijvoorbeeld 100% verhard versus gedeeltelijk groen)

  • Of er veranderingen zijn in ruimtebeslag (bijvoorbeeld uitbreiding van parkeerterrein)

Biodiversiteitsgegevens helpen ook bij risicobeoordeling, bijvoorbeeld bij vergunningen of locatiekeuze.

Veelgestelde vragen over VSME B5

🌿 Hoe weet ik of mijn locatie ‘nabij’ een natuurgebied ligt?

“Nabij” betekent grenzend of overlappend. Als je locatie volledig buiten een beschermd gebied ligt zonder fysieke nabijheid, hoef je niets in te vullen.

📏 Moet ik precieze oppervlaktes geven in hectare?

Nee. Een schatting is voldoende, zolang deze realistisch is. Je kunt het ook in m² noteren – dit wordt automatisch omgerekend.

🧭 Ik heb maar één locatie, in een stad – moet ik dit dan ook invullen?

Ja. Ook verhard stedelijk gebied wordt gerapporteerd. Je vult dan bijvoorbeeld 100% verhard, 0% natuur in.

Voorbeeld uit de praktijk (VSME B5)

Een installatiebedrijf in Gelderland werkt op een terrein van 0,5 hectare. Bij het invullen van B5 blijkt:

  • 0,3 ha is bebouwd/verhard (werkplaats, parkeerplaats)

  • 0,2 ha is gras en bomen op eigen terrein

  • Geen nabijheid tot natuurgebied

Het bedrijf gebruikt luchtfoto’s en terreinmetingen voor een schatting. Bij het indienen van het VSME-rapport kan het bedrijf aantonen dat biodiversiteit op het terrein behouden blijft.

Tijdsbesteding & benodigde documenten voor VSME B5

Gemiddelde tijdsbesteding: 5–25 minuten, afhankelijk van het aantal locaties.

Benodigde documenten:

  • Een lijst van locaties (met adres of coördinaten)

  • Eigendomsstatus van elk terrein

  • Schatting van landgebruik per type (verhard, natuur)

Frequently asked questions about the VSME

  • No. The VSME standard was created voluntarily by EFRAG (the same body behind the CSRD) for SMEs. Its purpose is to help SMEs report on sustainability in a structured way without having to prepare a full CSRD report.
    Note that more and more customers, supply chain partners and financiers do ask for it.

  • The CSRD is mandatory for large companies (from ±500 FTEs, listed and other cases) and requires extensive ESG reporting.


    The VSME standard is an accessible, simplified guideline for smaller companies. It is less complex, but is consistent with the structure of CSRD.

  • Yes. A VSME report shows in a clear and recognized way what your company is doing on sustainability. Increasingly, governments, corporates and municipalities are asking for ESG information in tenders - a VSME report is then a strong answer.

    • Basic: you indicate whether you have a policy, what you are already doing, and report your scope 1 and 2 emissions, your waste, and some basic characteristics about your staff, among other things.

    • Comprehensive: you go deeper into your strategy, risks, governance and performance. This level is especially relevant if you want to embed sustainability more strategically or it is demanded in the supply chain.

  • No problem. The VSME standard is meant precisely as a starting point. You can indicate where you do not yet have a policy or goals, and still deliver a report. This way you show transparency and demonstrate that you are on the move.

  • This is not certain. The expectation is that the VSME standard (or some variation of it) will become the norm for SMEs in the next few years, especially if they work with larger organizations covered by the CSRD, as well as in government procurement and bank lending. By starting now, you will be prepared and avoid catching up later.
